13 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe Outdoor Cats and Dairy: Get the WebMD data analyzes facts about cats and dairys, and why replacing a water-milk dish may not be better for your kitten. and milk: In children's stories, it always seems to be a game made in the sky. Who hasn't seen adorable pictures of a kitten lying on a cream-filled saucer? As with so many romances, the one between cats and dairy is not what is cracked to be. That's because although most cats love some milk, milk does not always return affection. The main culprit is the lactose of milk, which many cats have problems digesting. The result: or upset stomach. It's not exactly romantic. Cats and dairy get along? Can cats drink milk? This is what cat and veterinarian nutritionists told WebMD. Cats and Dairy Fact 1: Lactose Intolerance It is the norm Just as people, cats can be lactose intolerant. And even though we tend to think it's a problem, it's actually completely normal, says Linda P. Case, MS, assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and author of The Cat: Its, Nutrition, and Health. "The only time animals are exposed to lactose is when they are babies, in their mother's milk," says Case. To digest lactose, milk sugar, human and feline digestive systems should contain the lactase enzyme. We have a lot of this enzyme in our systems at birth, and it helps us thrive in our mother's milk. But as we grow up, it's normal for people and cats to start producing less lactase. Less lactase means less capacity to digest lactose. The result may eventually be lactose intolerance. When a lactose-intolerant cat drinks milk, lactose without digesting passes through the intestinal tract, bringing water with it, according to the website of Cornell University of Veterinary Medicine. Bacteria in the colon also ferment un digested sugars, producing volatile fatty acids. All that activity could lead to an upset mob and induce vomiting. But the most common symptom of lactose intolerance in cats is diarrhea, usually within eight to twelve hours, says Susan G. Wynn, DVM, CVA, CVCH, animal nutritionist in Atlanta and co-author of the Natural Veterinary Medicine Manual. Categories & Milk Facts 2: Many cats You can drink Milk Most of us have probably given some milk to our cats and we have never noticed a problem. That's because some cats tolerate milk well, Wynn tells WebMD. How do you know? Try to offer your cat a spoonful or two of milk. If you don't see symptoms within a day, the chances are good that your cat will do well with milk as an occasional treatment. However, most veterinarians do not recommend it. Cats don't need milk, and potential problems exceed potential benefits. Remember that of all kinds -- such as tuna, meat, cheese, or other "" -- should compensate not more than 5% to 10% of your cat's diet. The rest of your cat's calories must come from high quality, nutritionally complete. If you are not sure what it means for your cat, talk to your veterinarian. Also, remember that offering table food to a cat often teaches a cat to be finicky. Cat and dairy data 3: Yogurt and cheese can be easier to digestSometimes a cat that can't tolerate milk may not have any problems with other forms of dairy, such as yogurt, cheese, butter or ice cream. This is because "different forms of dairy foods contain varying amounts of lactose," says Wynn. There are two reasons for that. Foods such as yogurt and ice cream are often diluted with other things, such as water or added fats. They can also be cultivated, which means that microorganisms have digested part of lactose. So if you want to give a sensitive feline a little dairy, the possibilities of a reaction of intolerance are less with cheeses, yogurts and other cultivated dairy. Cat and dairy data 4: Kittens Do not need cow's milkDespite these lovely illustrations of notebook, " cow's milk is completely inadequate for kittens," says Wynn. Although kittens have lactase in their system, there is not enough of it to address the overload of lactose found in cow's milk. But lactose is not the only problem. "The case to the proportions of serum is also bad in cow's milk," says Case WebMD. If your kitten is young and still needs breast milk, you can try a milk substitute made specifically for kittens. Sold by veterinarians or found in pet shops, cat milk substitutes often contain cow's milk that "has been modified to approach as close as possible to the nutritional composition of cat's milk," says Case. This means a tight relationship of casein and serum, and a reduction in the amount of lactose. If you are fostering or raising an orphan kitten, "the milk replacers specifically formulated for kittens are definitely a way to go." For adult cats, treat milk substitutes like any other dairy product: You can offer small amounts as a gift. The same is true of dairy substitutes designed for humans, such as soy-free and lactose milk. You can give these as treats, but "in general, there is no reason to use them unless the cat has developed an unusual taste for them," says Wynn. Cats and Dairy Fact 5: Cats Need Water, First No matter how well tolerated cow's milk, your cat will always need a lot of fresh and clean water. According to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, water helps your cat: To encourage your cat to drink water, try to place several bowls of different depths around the house. Many cats also like running water, says Case. If yours is one, you can find kitten sources in most pet stores. Sources:Susan G.
